You take a deep breath, put the whistle to your lips, and blow in earnest. The shrill note rings through the trees. You wait a moment and listen and eventually hear a distant rustling. You look around for the source and see a large figure making its way slowly towards you. Your heart beats faster as you realize, while gnarled, the trunks of the trees here are too broad to climb. You continue scouring the terrain with your eyes but spot nowhere to hide. As the figure moves closer you see it is bigger than you initially realized. You find your feet rooted to the spot. You cannot will yourself to run or even move. You stare at the shape ambling towards you and realize it's an gigantic bear, its shoulders easily taller than yourself. Its shaggy fur has a bluish green tint towards the ends giving it a mossy look. Like the trees, the bear has a look about it that suggest immensely old age. It stops in front of you, sniffs the large fruit still at your feet, swallows it in a single gulp. It then lifts its great muzzle towards you and begins sniffing you all over before giving you an affectionate nuzzle with the side of its head. Unsure of what to do, you pat it on the head. It closes its eyes in apparent enjoyment. After a moment it lowers it front legs and gives you a meaningful grunt. You get the impression it wants you to ride it. You can climb on the bear's back, or continue wandering around on your own. |
