You take a deep breath, raise the whistle to your lips, and blow in earnest. A shrill note blasts down the tunnel, amplified by its own echoes. You hear explosive shrieks as bats sleeping along the ceiling awaken in a panic and begin pouring through the tunnel. Tiny stampeeding feet and hysterical squeaks join them as a flood of rats barrels towards you from the left. You manage to cover your face with your arms just in time as the tiny rodents start pelting your body from the air and scurrying across your feet from the floor, occassionally taking the long way round by climbing across your leg or up your body before leaping to the floor on the other side. You shudder at the sensation of tiny feet clawing along your body but stay frozen for fear of provoking a bite. After a couple of minutes the wave of vermin subsides. You wait for about a minute to make sure you don't feel any more animals on you before removing your arms from your face. You inspect yourself and are relieved to find no cuts or scratches on your skin. Though, to your disgust you have to remove several pieces of rat feces from your head and clothing. You stay quiet and listen intently for a while but hear nothing else. You put your whistle away. You can follow the walkway to your left, follow it downwards to your right, or you can give your flashlight a try. |
