You grab your oars and resume paddling, heading straight ahead on a collision course with your double. It mimics you, paddling with purpose in your direction. As the tips of your boats near, you instinctively close your eyes and brace yourself. After a few seconds of feeling nothing, you open your eyes again. You look around. You're sitting at the same bend in the stream, but the other boat is gone. As you continue rowing onward, you notice the reeds around you are getter much taller. You hear larger creatures moving through the grasses. An extremely large bird appears overhead from the left and lands on the front of your boat, causing it to splash and bob in the water. It stares at you with a large amber eye set against a body of glossy blue-black feathers. It's almost as large as you, with a hard-looking straight beak and a long neck. You can continue rowing, attempt to shoo the bird away, or attempt to talk to it. You leave your whistle and flashlight in your pocket as you fear they may provoke it. |
